Understanding Pressure Gauge Thread Types: NPT, BSP, G, and PT

You’ve selected the right pressure range, the right accuracy class, and the right dial size — but if the thread on your gauge doesn’t match the port on your system, none of that matters. The gauge won’t seat, the seal won’t hold, and you’ll be ordering a replacement instead of reading pressure.

Thread type is one of those specifications that seems minor until it blocks an entire installation. Yet it’s often the last thing engineers check, and the first thing that causes field problems.

This guide covers the four most common pressure gauge thread types — NPT, BSP, G, and PT — where each is used, what happens when you mix them, and how to choose the right one.

NPT — The North American Standard

NPT (National Pipe Thread Tapered) is defined by ASME B1.20.1 and dominates in North America. It uses a tapered profile — the thread diameter decreases along its length at a 1:16 taper ratio (approximately 1°47′ taper angle). The taper makes NPT self-sealing: as you tighten the gauge, increasing thread engagement compresses the mating surfaces. Most installations still use PTFE tape or pipe dope to fill the helical gap, but the taper geometry provides the primary seal.

Common sizes on pressure gauges: 1/8″ NPT (small gauges, 40–50 mm), 1/4″ NPT (the most widely used size, 63–100 mm), and 1/2″ NPT (larger gauges, 150–250 mm).

One thing to know: NPT sizes refer to nominal pipe bore, not actual thread diameter. A 1/4″ NPT thread has a major diameter of approximately 0.540″.

BSP — The European Standard, in Two Variants

BSP (British Standard Pipe) is used across Europe, the UK, Australia, and much of Asia. It comes in two variants that are easy to confuse:

BSPT (BSP Tapered) — Tapered profile with the same 1:16 ratio as NPT. But the thread form — flank angle, pitch, and diameter — is different. BSPT and NPT are not interchangeable, despite sharing the same taper angle.

G thread (BSPP — BSP Parallel) — Straight threads with no taper. G threads do not seal through thread engagement. They require a separate mechanism: an O-ring, a bonded sealing washer (Dowty seal), or a face seal on the gauge’s seating surface. Without that seal ring, screwing a G-thread gauge into a G-thread port creates a leak path along the entire thread helix.

Common BSP/G sizes: G 1/8 (small gauges), G 1/4 (the standard for European industrial gauges), G 1/2 (larger gauges).

One thing to know: A 1/4″ BSP thread has 19 TPI and a major diameter of 13.157 mm, while 1/4″ NPT has 18 TPI and 13.716 mm. The pitch difference alone means they won’t thread together.

G thread is the default for pressure gauges manufactured in China destined for European or international markets. If you don’t specify a thread type when ordering, you’ll most likely receive G-thread.

PT — The Japanese Standard

PT (Japanese Pipe Tapered) follows JIS B 0203. It uses the same ISO 7-1 tapered thread form as BSPT — PT and BSPT are dimensionally identical. Same taper ratio, pitch, flank angle, and major diameters.

PT is standard in Japan and common in equipment from Japanese manufacturers globally — automotive, semiconductor, and precision manufacturing.

One thing to know: PT 1/4 and BSPT 1/4 are the same thread. They mate and seal identically. The difference is only in naming convention.

What Happens When You Mix Thread Types

All four types use similar nominal pipe size designations (1/4″, 1/2″) — but they are not compatible.

NPT × BSP — The most common mistake. A 1/4″ NPT male will start threading into a 1/4″ BSP female because the diameters are close (13.716 mm vs 13.157 mm). But the pitch difference (18 TPI vs 19 TPI) causes cross-threading after 1–2 turns. The gauge feels “tight” but doesn’t seat, the connection leaks, and both the gauge and port threads get damaged. Forcing with excessive torque can gall threads, crack the gauge connection, or deform the port — creating a permanent leak path.

G (parallel) × tapered (NPT/BSPT/PT) — A G-thread gauge will thread into a tapered port without cross-threading, but there is zero taper engagement. The parallel thread doesn’t compress against the tapered wall. Without a separate seal sized for the tapered geometry, the connection leaks along the full thread length. Conversely, a tapered gauge in a G-thread port seats loosely at entry and binds at the bottom, producing an unreliable seal.

PT × BSPT — This one works. Since they share the same ISO 7-1 thread form, they are fully interchangeable.

Choosing the Right Thread Type

Identify your port standard

The thread type follows regional and industry conventions:

  • North America → NPT (ASME standards, US oil & gas)
  • Europe/UK/Australia → BSP or G (DIN/ISO, European chemical plants)
  • Japan → PT (JIS, Japanese OEM equipment)

If your existing system uses one thread type uniformly, don’t introduce a different one — adapters add cost and leak risk.

Match gauge thread to port

Either the thread forms match, or they don’t. No “close enough.” Check the specification sheet for explicit thread designation (e.g., “1/4 NPT” or “G 1/4”).

Use the right sealing method

  • Tapered threads (NPT, BSPT, PT): PTFE tape (2–3 wraps) or pipe dope on the male thread.
  • G (parallel) threads: Bonded washer, O-ring, or face seal. Verify the washer material matches your process media — standard nitrile, Viton for high-temperature, EPDM for steam.

Check code requirements

ASME B31.3 (US process piping) assumes NPT. PED 2014/68/EU (European pressure equipment) uses BSP/G. Boiler codes may specify thread types for safety connections. Verify before ordering — retrofitting a thread type on a coded installation is far more expensive than specifying correctly upfront.

Thread type determines whether your gauge seats, seals, and reads — or leaks, cross-threads, and requires replacement.
